Olufemi was arrested on the 10th of October 2023, upon arraignment, the court granted him bail but he could not perfect the bail conditions because of financial constraints. He was remanded in prison pending his trial and he had no lawyer because he could not afford one.
His health deteriorated badly while in prison and his families were not aware of his arrest, Our lawyer met him at one of our prison visits at Abeokuta and started representing him.
The police could not produce any witness to prove the case of stealing against Oluwafemi and on the 14th of May, 2024, our lawyer informed the court of the state of health of Oluwafemi who could barely walk, and applied to the court to strike out the case for want of diligent prosecution and the court granted the application with the condition that we must reunite him with his family.
Our lawyer located his family house and informed them of the situation on ground and he was immediately taken to the hospital.
Nigeria Prisons are in bad state! It is becoming a death trap for inmates!
Inmates have the right to life, their right to life should be protected. We call on the government to prioritize corrections and ensure protection of lives of inmates.
