Quam traveled by road from Cotonou to Lagos and arrived in Bariga around midnight. With no money for a hotel, he decided to spend the night at the park, planning to sleep in one of the buses. He found an open bus and settled in for the night. The Vigilante Unit at the park noticed him and, after questioning, allowed him to stay there.
At around 4 a.m., police on patrol discovered Quam, subjected him to harassment, and arrested him. He was taken to the police station with others who were arrested that night. Though he was granted administrative bail, Quam couldn't afford the bail amount. He was charged with "HIDING IN A DARK PLACE WITH INTENTION TO COMMIT A CRIME" and remanded at Ikoyi Correctional Centre.
There, Quam met with Headfort Foundation's Legal Aid Team, shared his story, and received legal representation. On March 3, 2020, our lawyer demonstrated that the charge was baseless, and the court dismissed it. Quam spent three months in prison before being released.
